No Luck. Philadelphia’s Gambling Problem

Building new casinos in Philadelphia and its suburbs was welcomed: new tax source for city budget, new work places and so on.

But gambling was never an innocent entertainment.

Before Philadelphians would have to go to Atlantic City in order to try their luck. Not any more with three new casinos: Sugar House Casino in Central Philly, Parx Casino in Bensalem (North East Philly) and Harrah’s Casino in Chester (South Philly).

Unfortunately, not all the casino-goers come there just for fun and to spend couple extra hundred dollars. There are people among them who come with their last money in despair of winning some extra cash. And some of them suffer from gambling addiction

The most dangerous thing about all this is that people are losing not only money, but also their lives: the statistic of suicide among gambling addicts is really frightening.

And what could be done in this situation?

A lot. In our city, just like in the rest of the country, there are special centers and hotlines that are devoted to help addicts and their families finding the way out. For instance, 1-800-GAMBLER.
