A Building Collapsed In The Center City of Philadelphia

” One woman has died and 13 people have been hurt after a building collapsed in the centre of the US city of Philadelphia,” according to NBC News.

The collapse happened at 2140 Market Street around 10:40 a.m. A four-storey building fell down, which housed a Salvation Army Thrift Store. The building had both commercial and residential spaces, and was being demolished, though the cause of the collapse was unknown, officials said.

According to Philadelphia Police, that the collapse may have been the result of an industrial accident.

“I was standing there looking out my window, watching the men at work on the building, and the next thing I know I heard something go kaboom,” Veronica Haynes, who was in an apartment building nearby, said to NBC News

Bernie Ditomo told a local NBC broadcaster he was driving on a nearby street when he felt something “like an earthquake”.

“I said, ‘What the hell is going on?’,” Mr Ditomo said. “My truck is totalled. I am a little dusty and dirty, but I’m alright. I am one of the lucky ones.”

Mayor Nutter said the woman who died was 35 years old and that her family didn’t want any more information about her to be discussed publicly.

“I ask all Philadelphians and all who care to keep that Philadelphia woman and her family in your prayers,” Nutter said.
