American Memories, American Resilience

An American flag flies from the nearly complete Freedom Tower, rising in lower Manhattan next to where the World Trade Center towers were destroyed on September 11, 2001.

In a series of solemn ceremonies in New York, Virginia and Pennsylvania each September 11, Americans come together to remember, to grieve and to renew their commitment to a future that is peaceful and prosperous not just for the United States but for the world.

Past and present U.S. presidents and other federal officials join with survivors and families of victims to mourn the lives cut short by the attacks and celebrate the resilience of the American spirit.
