Startled by a recent newspaper report that more than 1,700 Philadelphia tax delinquents are receiving local property tax breaks, state Sen. Mike Stack sent a letter today to Mayor Michael Nutter, urging him to better organize the tax collection process.
“With each passing month, there are more and more examples as to why our property tax collection system is in disarray,” said Stack (D-Phila), in response to a March 6 Philadelphia Daily News article, Tax break recipients short city $8 million. “The finger pointing between the Revenue Department and the Office of Property Assessment as to who has the authority to stop property tax abatements for tax delinquents must stop. It’s insulting to Philadelphians who work hard and pay their taxes on time.”
Both the Revenue Department and the Office of Property Assessment are under Mayor Michael Nutter’s direct authority.
“The mayor must decide which department should handle it and ask them to immediately stop property tax abatements for tax delinquents,” Stack said. “We cannot tolerate any more blame and confusion. We need direction and leadership to bring habitual tax evaders to justice.”
