Kira Kazantsev Is New Miss America

15 women reached Sunday night’s pageant show in Atlantic City. Miss New York – Kira Kazantsev was chosen as a Miss America 2015. She shocked the crowd, winning New York’s third-straight crown.

When she was announced the winner, she was handed the crown from last year’s Miss America – and a Miss New York – Nina Davuluri.

“And while the show’s television ratings weren’t the best, this year’s telecast absolutely blew up on Twitter,” CNN Money reports. “Over 300,000 tweets and over 48 million Twitter impressions, according to Nielsen, is comparable to other “live event TV” hits”.

The winner, 22-year-old young lady graduated Hofstra University. Her platform is domestic violence. During the question and answer portion of the pageant Kira said sexual assault in the military is a problem that needs the attention of lawmakers.

During the talents competition Kazantsev sang Pharrell Williams’ “Happy”. In the same time she was tapping a red plastic cup on the floor, a la Anna Kendrick’s character in the movie “Pitch Perfect.”

Kazantsev wins a $50,000 scholarship provided in part by Joseph Ribkoff Inc. and the Miss America Organization to continue her education, which she intends to use towards law school.

Kira Kazantsev was born in California to parents from Moscow, Russia. Her father, George, is a surgical oncologist and her mother, Julia, is a real-estate broker. At the time of her Miss America crowning, she had a 15-year-old brother, Boris.

Kazantsev is fluent in Russian and Spenish.
