Margaret Thatcher, “Champion of Freedom”

President Obama, in a statement of sympathy to the British people following the death of Baroness Margaret Thatcher, praised the grocer’s daughter who became Britain’s only female prime minister as an unapologetic supporter of the trans-Atlantic alliance.

“Here in America, many of us will never forget her standing shoulder to shoulder with President Reagan, reminding the world that we are not simply carried along by the currents of history — we can shape them with moral conviction, unyielding courage and iron will,” the president said, adding that the United States and Great Britain continue to “carry on the work to which she dedicated her life — free peoples standing together, determined to write our own destiny.”

Thatcher, shown with Reagan outside the White House in Washington in 1983, worked with him in the 1980s to end the Cold War and extend the promise of freedom to those living behind the Iron Curtain.
