Penn State is now acknowledged with a 5-star rating as one of the most LGBT-friendly universities in the country. Only 33 universities out of 300 participating received the top honors.
The index of LGBT-friendliness was based on a 50-point self-assessment questionnaire covering 8 primary factors: policy inclusion, support and institutional commitment, academic life, student life, housing, campus safety, counseling and health, and recruitment and retention efforts.
Allison Subasic, director of Penn State’s LGBT Student Resource Center said: “We have one of the best centers in the country. We have amazing programs, resources, student interns, policies on campus and we have an active alumni group.”
This year the university intends to improve even these high ratings by providing specific services for transgender students.
