Kenneth Mazik, 24, of Chadds Ford crashed his Jeep through a chain-link fence surrounding the Philadelphia International Airport along Hog Island Road on Thursday around 11 a.m.
An affidavit by FBI Special Agent Megan MacDonald said to local media, that ” an airplane was about to land when Kenneth Richard Mazik zoomed down the flight’s designated runway at speeds of over 100 mph”. Mazik drove around the airport for several minutes, including down runway 27R, before police were able to stop the car and take him into custody, according to CBS News.
According to the statement of Philadelphia International Airport officials, their security system operated “extremely well” .
As soon as Mazik’s Jeep Cherokee rammed the gate, FAA air’ were notified by ground radar of the breach and “acted quickly to stop all traffic to avoid any conflicts.”
Seventy-five aircraft were placed in a holding pattern and 80 others were prevented from departing on time.
Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Joe Sullivan says police have no motive so far.
“We’re trying to determine that right now,” Sullivan told KYW Newsradio. “Whether or not he has psychological problems or substance abuse problems, that’s all part of the investigation.”
Sullivan stresses that police believe this is an isolated incident with no link to terrorism.
Kenneth Mazik was charged with a federal offense that carries a maximum 20-year prison term and a fine of up to $250,000.
Police indicate that he-has had previous run-ins with the law.
