As the US Postal Service studies a list of about 3,700 post offices for possible shutdown nationwide, several postal outlets in Philadelphia and the nearby suburbs have shown up on the list, CBS News reported.
On the list of local post offices are the Benjamin Franklin post office in in Old City, and ones in Manayunk, Roxborough, East Germantown, 30th Street train station, Overbrook, and St. Davids in Wayne.
The USPS says it is attempting to head off a dire financial situation.
Most of the impact in New Jersey would be in the northern half of the state.
Officials said: “Just because an office is on this list does not necessarily mean it’s going to close. We can’t make a decision now because the process takes quite a few months. We don’t have a deadline, but no office will be closed before this December” .
Factors being weighed include community impact, effect on employees, economic savings to the Postal Service, and compliance with government policy.
