See the city in a whole new light. Lisa Nutter will turn on the lights on the holiday tree at the City of Philadelphia’s annual Tree lighting Spectacular on Wednesday, December 5 at LOVE Park in Center City. The center of Love Park will come alive with the sights and sounds of the season in a magical “Philly Wonderland” production.
Mrs. Nutter will share the stage with a stellar holiday lineup from the entertainment fields of movies, music and theater to ring in the winter holidays — Philadelphia style. The event is free and open to the public.
Participating in the program will be: Acclaimed bassist Gerald Veasley; duet by Kevonna Rose (West Berlin, NJ), winner of the 2012 Wawa Welcome America! Singer-Songwriter Contest, and Christian Tizon/SAP Sounds (Wayne, Pa.), Grammy-nominated Frankie Negrón (Newark NJ), Craig Hayes & Company Choir (Delaware Valley); Star Search sensation and former Dream Team singer Greg Raposo (Long Island, NY); Forever Plaid (Frankie, Sparky, Jinx and Smudge) of the Walnut Theatre’s production of “Plaid Tidings;” Conestoga Angels Precision Marching and Drum Corps; Grupo Fuego dance company; Miss Philadelphia Lauren Bilski, Mrs. Pennsylvania Susan Huntley and Mrs. New Jersey Robin Vitale; Gandalf the Grey and Legolas — movie characters from the Lord of the Rings trilogy and director Peter Jackson’s new film, The Hobbit, Sixers Dream Team/Sixers Flight Crew and Santa Claus.
The Mayor’s Office of Civic Engagement and Volunteer Service’s SERVE Philadelphia will launch a toy drive (unwrapped toys) near the iconic LOVE sculpture. In addition, CBS3/ CW Philly is sponsoring its “Joy of Sharing Holiday Toy Drive” at LOVE Park. Both campaigns benefit families served by the Salvation Army of Greater Philadelphia.
The Mayor’s Office of Civic Engagement toy collections continue from Thursday, December 6 to Friday, December 21. Donations can be dropped off at various city buildings: City Hall (northeast visitor’s entrance); the Municipal Services Building (1401 JFK Blvd./ Lobby); One Parkway, (1515 Arch St./ Lobby); Criminal Justice Center (1301 Filbert St./ Lobby), and Fire Administration Building (240 Spring Garden St./ Lobby).
LOVE Park serves as the backdrop for the fifth annual Christmas Village in Philadelphia presented by OneMain Financial. The Christmas Village in Philadelphia, which returned in November, is an outdoor holiday market in the heart of Philadelphia open through December 24. Dec 5th is the day we have been anticipating for almost two weeks – finally the huge municipal Christmas Tree will be lit in the traditional Tree Lighting Ceremony by Philadelphia’s First Lady Lisa Nutter! The show, which will be organised by the city, is always a crowd puller.
Be sure to get there early to get a good spot to see how Mayor Nutter lights the huge tree!
The ceremony will start at 5pm, more information on the schedule will follow!
LOVE Park Tree lighting event sponsor is Kindy’s Factory Outlet. The backdrop of the event is the Christmas Village in Philadelphia presented by OneMain Financial, outdoor holiday market built and modeled after the traditional Christmas markets in Germany. The village features more than 60 vendors in festive wooden decorated booths and two large tents offering a range of international holiday gifts, ornaments, jewelry, high-quality arts and crafts as well as European and American food, drinks and sweets.
