U.S. Commemorates International Roma Day

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, on behalf of President Obama, sent best wishes to all Roma on International Roma Day, April 8, and called for an end to the discrimination they continue to suffer.

“Roma,” Kerry said, “face wide-ranging discrimination in access to education, employment, housing, and healthcare.” The secretary condemned the walling off of some Roma villages and eviction of entire Roma communities from their homes in some countries around the world.

“The United States reaffirms its determination to meet this challenge, together with European governments, civil society, and through international organizations such as the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, to achieve equality, opportunity, and inclusion for all Roma,” Kerry said.
