Gary DeMarzo, Mayor of Wildwood, and assistant Wildwood municipal attorney, Samuel Lashman, have been indicted for alleged official misconduct.
DeMarzo apparently used taxpayer money to pay legal fees for a case against DeMarzo in 2009-10.
While the exact dollar amount has not been released, DeMarzo supposedly spent between $200 and $75,000 of taxpayer money. These funds were allegedly received by Samuel Lashman.
The Cape May County prosecutor, Robert Taylor, had presented the case to the Department of Criminal Justice and the charges had been deemed appropriate. The funds initially used by DeMarzo were for a case against DeMarzo where he had to choose between his position in office and his position as a city police officer. DeMarzo and Lashman have denied these allegations.
