On Friday, Prince William and his new bride, Kate, are set to make their debut on United States soil starting in Hollywood, California. Melissa Bromley, West Coast bureau chief of Us Weekly, says: “We have never had a royal couple that have so much celebrity as these two. American girls are obsessed with Kate Middleton – what she wears, what she does, and the fact that she was an ordinary girl who managed to bag a prince.” To backup Melissa’s statement, searches on Yahoo! for the royal couple are up 354 percent this week as talk of their visit to the states has grown rampant. While the royal trip has already raked in extra tourism revenue for the city of Los Angeles, and “Castle Tours” are up 25% in the California countryside, this royal visit is not for celebrity or stardom. Continued Bromley, “If they came to Hollywood and had dinner with Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise and hung out with David and Victoria Beckham and then went shoe shopping, that is definitely something they would be criticized for.”
Britain is in the middle of an austerity drive and Will and Kate’s primary purpose for the trip is set to be for charity. Their schedule includes a visit to a Los Angeles kids’ inner city arts project, a meeting with military families, and a new media trade panel visit. The only star-studded event on the itinerary is a black-tie, $25,000 per table dinner for BAFTA (British Academy for Film and Television) of which Prince William is president. The celebrities set to attend are Tom Hanks, Nicole Kidman, and young Hollywood newcomers. The couple’s private secretary, Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, however, reiterated that the goal is “not to meet celebrities but to connect young British talent with Hollywood decision-makers”. Yet, a snapshot of the two walking beside Brangelina would certainly be the perfect mix or royalty and celebrity. Fingers crossed the paparazzi snap a good one!
